Shelby Anderson

Shelby Anderson has never met a stranger, just friends she hasn't chatted up yet. She lives by one rule: "Everyone can teach you something if you're open to learn." That rule has led her into fascinating conversations, unexpected friendships, and at least one very long chat in a grocery checkout line.

She learned to read a room the honest way, by helping build her family's restaurant from the ground up. Working a packed Friday night and pouring drinks at the same time will teach you more about human nature than any textbook. Later she became a Montessori teacher for third, fourth and fifth graders. That's the age when kids stop just asking "what?" and start asking "why?" and "how?" She skipped the rote worksheets and gave her students room to explore, test ideas and follow their own curiosity, because that's how real thinkers are made. Watching a nine-year-old suddenly understand long division, or the solar system, never got old.

Shelby is fascinated by the brain and why people do the wonderfully weird things they do. Years of answering a classroom full of "but why?" questions only made her more curious. Her reading list looks like a bookstore's lost and found: quantum physics, self-help and Stephen King, sometimes all in the same week. That probably explains a lot.

When she isn't reading, she's on the pickleball court ("tennis for the unathletic," in her words), hiking a trail, or paddling a kayak somewhere scenic. She's happily living the gypsy life, and her answer to the strange things life throws her way is almost always the same: "Yes!"
